The Gong Man 03:32
Wake in fear, stretch out an arm Feeling for the gong-alarm A gong at eight, the breakfast churns By the fire the trousers burn Who is the Gong Man? The Gong Man strikes for lunch and then The Gong Man sends me back again I watch the gong, its movement slight At last it sends me home at night Who is the Gong Man? Who is the Gong Man? Back to bed, the ringing fades But dreams are bronze of many shades Whilst half asleep the Gong Man cries I wind the gong and realise I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man I am the Gong Man

The Chinese must be yellow, while the Russians paint it red Just like the necks of Americans who turn blue when they're dead Colour bars serve hatred to those they don't let in Black and white aren't colours, they're just shades on your skin The colours, colours, colours are speaking to me Orange government agent shooting at the leaves Wipe away the sweat of responsibility on your brown shirt sleeves Different hues take over to keep corporations in the pink The evidence is all around you, use your grey matter and think The colours, colours, colours are speaking A marching riot of colour, harmful ultra-violent Gloss over cause and reason, the loud are best kept silent Red crosses over nations, blood of the young and green Winning medals in the battles, synthetic esteem The colours, colours, colours are speaking to me

about

This 40th Anniversary EP includes remastered versions of 'The Gong Man' and The Colours Are Speaking to Me' from The Very Things debut 7" vinyl single, released in 1983, plus a bonus live version of 'The Gong Man'.

The original idea for the title was sparked by a TV programme 'Who is the Gong Man', about the title sequence on Rank Studio film releases and the identity of the muscle-bound man who was featured striking a massive gong. The lyrics reflect on the grind of the 9-5.

Photographs and artwork by RR Dallaway, featuring The Shend as the Gong Man and his victim, Ian Gilbert. Tracks remastered by Tony Sherrard at Forest Room.
